Our Background

Studio Nord Ceramic began almost by accident. Romina and Philipp met while studying architecture at the Bauhaus University in Weimar — a place built on the idea that form and function should never be separated, and that even the smallest object deserves the same care as a building. That way of thinking never really left us.

After moving to Zürich to work as architects, we found ourselves missing the immediacy of working with our hands. Architecture moves slowly — years pass between a first sketch and a finished building. Porcelain gave us the opposite: an idea in the morning, a shape by the afternoon, glazed and fired within days. What started as an evening hobby in a shared kitchen slowly took over more of our free time, and eventually became Studio Nord Ceramic.

Every piece we make still carries something of our architectural training — clean geometry, a respect for proportion, an interest in how light falls across a surface. But porcelain has its own rules too. It shrinks unevenly, glazes behave unpredictably in the kiln, and no two pieces ever come out quite the same. We've come to love that tension between precision and imperfection.

Today, Studio Nord Ceramic is still very much a side project — made in small batches of porcelain, between full-time jobs, on weekends and evenings. That's also why every piece takes the time it takes, and why no two cups from the same batch are ever completely identical. We think that's part of the point.
